Variety of trees layered in three shades of green

Thank You for Growing Family Medicine!

We at the Department of Family Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine want to thank you for growing Family Medicine through your practice, community support, teaching and leadership. To that end we hope you enjoy growing a token of our appreciation in the form of a Norway Spruce that will hopefully bring life and greenery into your home and then to your outdoor space!

Tree growing at three different stages as a watering can sprinkles water on them

Growing Instructions

  1. Place the planting pot into a cup or a flat saucer.
  2. Place seed puck in bottom of the pot.
  3. Very slowly pour 1/3 cup (80ml) WARM water onto puck.
  4. Allow 5 minutes for puck to expand slowly.
  5. Fluff pick with fork or pencil until crumbly.
  6. Push all seeds into the puck until they disappear (less than 10mm). Smooth soil over the holes.
  7. Place the pot in a warm sunny spot until you see sprouts (14 to 21 days). Water only the soil surface lightly when it looks dry.
  8. When seeds have sprouted place in full sun and keep damp until the first true needles start.
  9. Once the needles have fully emerged choose 1 or 2 of the best growing plants and remove the rest.
  10. A 10-cm (4 inch) seedling could take 12 to 16 weeks when watered properly and given the right amount of sun.
  11. Plant the tree seeding pot in the garden deep enough to cover the pot completely. Water daily for 2 weeks.
