Undergraduate Family Medicine Recognition Awards

Help us recognize the outstanding contributions of family medicine preceptors in Undergraduate Family Medicine Medical Education. These awards celebrate the dedication, mentorship, and expertise of educators who shape the next generation of compassionate, skilled physicians.

Early Excellence Award

This award recognizes a DFM Faculty member who is actively teaching (clinically, academically, formal mentorship, curriculum development or holds a leadership role in medical education) undergraduate medical students at the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM). These individuals have demonstrated exceptional commitment, enthusiasm, and innovation in their first five years of practice. 

The nominee exhibits the following qualities 

  • Modelling compassion in service and education.
  • Innovative teaching methods or styles.
  • Active participation in curriculum development or academic activities.
  • Positive feedback from students and colleagues.

Nominations welcome from: physicians, preceptors, colleagues, learners (residents or students) and/or administration.

Family Medicine Education Stewardship Award

Honoring a DFM Faculty member who has been actively teaching undergraduate medical students at the Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) for 10 or more years. The award acknowledges the sustained excellence, leadership, and impact these educators have had on generations of medical students and colleagues.

The nominee embodies the following qualities

  • Continued excellence in teaching over a decade or more.
  • Significant contributions to the curriculum or departmental growth.
  • Mentorship of junior FM educators and support for educational initiatives.
  • Consistent positive feedback from students and colleagues.
  • Commitment to improving the FM education environment.

Nominations welcome from: physicians, preceptors, colleagues, learners (residents or students) and/or administration.

Student Choice: Family Medicine Preceptor of the Year Award

Recognizes a DFM faculty member who has made an extraordinary impact on students' learning experiences. It is entirely student-nominated and aims to celebrate educators who foster inspiration, engagement, and academic growth in the undergrad student body.

Two awards will be given annually. 

  • Community preceptor (Calgary and surrounding areas, rural and remote faculty members)
  • DFM Academic Teaching Clinic preceptor (South Health Campus, Sunridge or Sheldon M Chumir Clinics) 

Nominee qualities

  • Inspires and motivates Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) students to excel in their studies and clinical development.
  • Demonstrates excellence in communication and teaching ability.
  • Provides mentorship and guidance outside of regular coursework.
  • Fosters a supportive and inclusive learning environment.
  • Demonstrates dedication to the success of students both in and out of the classroom.
  • A positive FM role model who embodies the ideals of the profession.
