Dr. Fiona Schulte appointed associate dean, Research Grants

Dr. Fiona Schulte

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Fiona Schulte, PhD, as the new associate dean, Research Grants. The appointment was effective Jan. 1, 2025.

Dr. Schulte is an associate professor in the Department of Oncology and a registered psychologist in the Hematology, Oncology and Transplant Program at the Alberta Children’s Hospital. She takes over the role previously held by Dr. Savraj Grewal, PhD.

Dr. Schulte’s research focuses on child, adolescent and young adult psychosocial oncology with particular interest in the long-term psychosocial outcomes of pediatric cancer patients, survivors and their families. She has made significant contributions towards the development of guidelines for the long-term surveillance of mental health difficulties among children, adolescents and young adults who have been diagnosed with cancer. Her academic work has had direct clinical implications on the surveillance of chronic health problems, subsequent cancers, and the mental health of survivors of childhood cancer. 

Dr. Schulte is the past president of the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology and a leader on several other national and international committees focused on improving the care of children, adolescents and young adults diagnosed with oncologic or hematological conditions

Dr. Schulte completed PhD studies in social and behavioral health science at the University of Toronto and a Master of Arts in clinical psychology at York University, Toronto. She completed a postdoctoral fellowship at the Alberta Children’s Hospital, Calgary.

Dr. Schulte has received numerous awards including the Canadian Cancer Society William E. Rawls Prize for Research Excellence in 2023. She also received the Research Excellence Award from the Canadian Association of Psychosocial Oncology in 2002 and a Young Investigator Award from the International Society of Pediatric Oncology. In 2017, she was among Avenue Calgary Magazine’s Top 40 Under 40.
