Appointment effective January 1, 2023
Nathan Peters

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Nathan Peters, PhD, to department head, Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases. The appointment takes effect on January 1, 2023.

Dr. Peters is the co-director of the Calvin, Phoebe and Joan Snyder Institute for Chronic Diseases and an associate professor in the department of Microbiology, Immunology and Infectious Diseases at CSM and holds a joint appointment within the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine.

Dr. Peters earned a Bachelor of Science and PhD in Microbiology and Immunology from the University of Saskatchewan, where he was the recipient of a Canadian Governor General’s Gold Medal. He completed his Post-doctoral Fellowship in the Laboratory of Parasitic Disease at the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases in Bethesda, MD. During his post-doctoral studies, Dr. Peters began to study the role of inflammatory cells during infection with the parasite Leishmania and their impact on vaccine efficacy.

Dr. Peters is most interested in research related to immunology, infectious diseases, vaccination and inflammation. He leads Peters Lab for Vector-Transmitted Diseases at the Snyder Institute, which studies the immuno-biology of chronic infectious diseases with an emphasis on vector transmitted and neglected tropical diseases. The Lab is investigating the earliest events in the host response, including inflammatory cell interactions with a vector inoculated pathogen, and how inflammation alters the regulation and expression of immunity. The Lab aims to develop new therapies and vaccines to combat infectious diseases that impact the world’s most neglected populations.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Peters on his new appointment.

Sincerely,

Todd Anderson, MD
