The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Savraj Grewal, PhD, as the new senior associate dean, Research. The appointment is effective July 1.

Dr. Grewal will replace Dr. Gerald Zamponi, PhD, whom we thank for his 12 years of service in the role.

Dr. Grewal is a professor in the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and was appointed associate dean, Research Grants, in 2022. He has held many leadership positions with the Arnie Charbonneau Cancer Institute (ACCI), including the lead of Research and Mentorship between 2013 and 2021 followed by associate director of Basic and Translational Research and co-chair of the Charbonneau Faculty Mentorship and EDIA (Equity, Diversity, Inclusion and Accessibility) committees. He has been instrumental in developing and implementing strategies to enhance research success within the ACCI.

Dr. Grewal is a cell and developmental biologist. His research program uses Drosophila as a model system to investigate the cell-to-cell signalling pathways and genetic mechanisms that control cell and tissue growth in physiological and pathological contexts.

Dr. Grewal completed a Bachelor of Science in pharmacology at King’s College London, UK, and a PhD in cell and developmental biology at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland, Oregon. He carried out his postdoctoral research at the Fred Hutchinson Cancer Center in Seattle, Washington, and first joined the University of Calgary as an assistant professor in 2007.

Dr. Grewal has received an Alberta Innovates Health Solutions Research Scholar award as well as Alberta Cancer Foundation and Canadian Institutes of Health Research new investigator awards. He also has received multiple awards for excellence in supervision at UCalgary.

Please join me in congratulating Dr. Grewal on his new appointment.
