The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Thomas Raedler, MD, as associate dean, Continuing Medical Education and Professional Development (CME&PD). The appointment takes effect Jan. 1, 2022.

He takes over for Dr. Kelly Burak who has served as Associate Dean, CME&PD since January 2017. During his term, Dr. Burak successfully led CME&PD to full accreditation with the Committee for Accreditation of Continuing Medical Education (CACME), helped the Physician Learning Program (PLP) expand its reach and impact, co-led the development of a new provincial CPD network and led the planning committee for COVID Corner, which saw more than 15,000 participants attend the first 25 sessions of COVID-19 related CPD. Following his administrative leave, Dr. Burak plans to continue to work with the PLP and in a new Peer Coaching Program being developed at CSM.

Thomas has been an associate professor in the Department of Psychiatry at the CSM since 2007. While providing inpatient and outpatient services at Foothills Medical Centre, he also runs a clinic at Pathways to Housing, a housing first program in Calgary focused on serving severely mentally ill clients with a long history of homelessness.

He currently serves as medical director of the Mental Health Clinical Trials Unit and the continuing professional development director for the Department of Psychiatry. He was appointed as site chief for the Department of Psychiatry at Foothills Medical Centre in January 2020. He is a former president of the Alberta Psychiatric Association and past president of the Schizophrenia Society of Alberta.

Thomas studied and trained in medicine in the United States and Germany, graduating with a medical degree from the Ludwig-Maximilians-University in Munich, Germany in 1990. Prior to arriving in Calgary, he worked at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center of Boston and the National Institute of Mental Health in Bethesda, Maryland.

Please join me in welcoming Thomas to this key role in the delivery of the CSM’s professional development programming.

Sincerely,

Jon Meddings, MD
