In Memoriam: George Wyse, Cumming School of Medicine

It is with deep sadness that we mourn the loss of Dr. D. George Wyse, MD’74, PhD, professor emeritus in the Department of Cardiac Sciences.

George passed away peacefully with his wife Bonnie at their home in Canmore on Jan. 6.

After obtaining his medical degree from the University of Calgary in 1974 and training in internal medicine and cardiology, Dr. Wyse joined the Faculty of Medicine in 1978. He became professor in 1985 and was the chief of cardiology from 1986 to 1993. He served as associate dean, clinical affairs from 1993 to 1999, and has been an emeritus professor since 2005.

He continued to remain active in research and co-authored Hearts, Minds & Vision: Roots of the Libin Cardiovascular Institute of AB. Originally a vascular biologist, Dr. Wyse is known for his research in heart rhythm management, particularly atrial fibrillation. His publications have been cited over 18,000 times.

George is remembered as a visionary and exceptional mentor. The CSM community joins George and Bonnie’s family and friends in mourning the loss. They were known for their dedication to their family and for helping others.

The UCalgary campus flag will be lowered at half-mast in honour of George.
