RCPSC Prix d'excellence Award
Dr. Mike Kalisiak is the 2014 receipient of the Royal College of Physicians & Surgeons of Canada (RSCPC) Prix d'exellence. The award was established to recognize Fellows of the Royal College in good standing who have made significant contributions in providing outstanding patient care to their patients and the community in which they practice.
Dr. Kalisiak holds an appointment as an Assistant Clinical Professor of dermatology at both the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta. He completed his medical degree as well as a residency in dermatology at the University of Alberta.
His practice in Calgary is focused on skin cancer prevention, early detection, and treatment. In addition to clinical practice, he has participated in the medical community as a Councillor at the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Alberta, Delegate to the Alberta Medical Association Representative Forum, Delegate to the Canadian Medical Association General Council, Board Member of the Canadian Society of Dermatologic Surgery, and in other capacities.
Dr. Kalisiak believes in the importance of prevention as an integral aspect of health care. Over the past several years, he has co-chaired a multi-stakeholder organization aiming to protect youth and adults from skin cancer caused by tanning beds. As a member of the Provincial Cutaneous Tumour Team, he took on a lead role in the development of the “Prevention of Skin Cancer” Clinical Practice Guidelines. He is also a member of the Alberta Medical Association's Health Issues Council, a body responsible for many health promotion initiatives supported by AMA.
Dr. Kalisiak has published several peer-reviewed articles, and numerous continuing medical education features and articles on skin cancer prevention in popular press. He particularly enjoys presenting at educational events and sharing his knowledge and passion for dermatology and health care issues.
