Talking to Your Instructor About AI Use

Helpful tips for a fruitful conversation

The University of Calgary does not have an institution-wide policy regarding AI use in coursework. It’s important to understand your instructors’ expectations before using AI tools in your courses. Talking to your instructor can help provide you clarity and direction.

Check the Course Outline and Assignment Sheets

You need explicit permission from your instructor before you can use Gen AI in your coursework. Check your course syllabus and assignment instructions before approaching your instructor. The documents provided by your instructor may permit or restrict the use of AI.

If your instructor’s expectations are unclear, it’s a good idea to approach them directly. Never assume that AI is allowed, as this risks committing academic misconduct.

For more help with understanding instructors’ AI statements check out the Student Success Centre’s Checklist for Using AI in Assignments.

Ask Your Instructor Respectfully

Even if some courses allow the use of AI tools, some instructors may limit or prohibit the use of AI if it interferes with the learning outcomes. To fully understand your instructor’s expectations, consider talking to your instructor during office hours, after class, or by email. Remember to be clear, specific, and polite.

Further Resources

Many students may feel reluctant to approach their instructor about AI use, but remaining transparent shows genuine academic integrity.
