Dear Wobbegongs! Congratulations on embarking on this new adventure, it took a lot of hard work and courage to get to this point and now the journey continues! Practicing medicine is indeed a privilege. Please remember to take the time to really listen to your patient and let them know that you "see them". Compassion is your super-power. Don't let your clinic days get so overloaded that you forget to really listen and stop to consider what your patient is telling you. Take good care of yourselves and your family and stay connected to your friends. Enjoy the ride and wishing you all long and happy careers in this incredible profession!

You have arrived on your life journey to start medical school. Congratulations. You will find the strangers become friends and you will stick together. Chase your dreams and stay committed to your dream of advocating for your patients. Above all, remember loving kindness to yourself, your colleagues, the people you work with and your patients. Let kindness be your mantra! It will serve you well as you study and work and play. We all need each other and we will do it best if we are kind with each other.

You will one day, have your own pain and suffering and in those extreme moments, you will not care who is helping you. But you will be grateful for them. Apply that same ethos to the ones you will be caring for.. You are on a journey of the most noble profession.

As you begin, remind yourself why you chose this path, and hold onto that memory tightly when the going gets tough. We are all so excited for you and can't wait to welcome you as colleagues one day! Welcome to our profession! I remember vividly ( now almost 50 years later) my first day in medical school at U of C. I even remember the seat where I sat in the "Orange Theatre" in the very first hour. I was so excited and felt such a privilege to be there. My life in Medicine since then has been nothing but a great privilege and a daily adventure. Sometimes hard, sometimes scary, always challenging and humbling. With absolutely no regrets, I wish you all the very best. You have chosen well.

Congratulations and welcome!  Some things you learn now will no longer be how you treat patients in ten years but as long as you keep learning, adapting, and staying connected to your medical community, you will keep current on the latest medical knowledge. I highly recommend using UpToDate.com (subscription often paid for by UofC). Also, don't let charting/documenting become your life.  I wish someone taught me this from the very beginning. Good luck!!

Embrace Calgary. Go to the mountains, the Performing Arts and the little restaurants. I once looked up from my books and said to myself, ‘in 2 hours I can be skiing down from the top chairlift at Lake Louise’. I did it. Share your stories about your life with your preceptors. Make them laugh. You are now part of a very big family, all equals, and we want to know you.

Make sure you keep in touch with your classmates and lean on eachother for support. Your friends and colleagues are an invaluable part of getting through clerkship. It has its hard moments, but I promise it gets better! You will learn so much and by the end you will be surprised at how far you've come. You got this!!!
