Biography

Dr Wycliffe-Jones graduated from Edinburgh Medical School in 1984 and completed his General Practice training in Aberdeen in 1987. He worked as a full-time GP in the Highlands of Scotland for 18 years before moving to his current role in the Department of Family Medicine in Calgary in 2005.

Over his time with the Department, in addition to providing care for his patients at Sunridge Family Medicine Teaching Centre, and teaching students and Residents there, he has held a number of leadership roles including Sunridge Clinical Lead, FM Clerkship Director, Residency Program Director, FM Postgraduate Director, Residency Assessment Director, FM Enhanced Skills Program Director and Rural FM Program Director. As the Calgary Family Medicine Residency Program Director, he led the development and implementation of a new competency-based curriculum and programmatic assessment program for Family Medicine Residency training in 2012.("Triple C").

Between 2014 and 2020 he was the Chair of the CFPC national Residency Accreditation Committee and is currently the Chair of the CFPC Postgraduate Education Committee and Co-Chair of the Family Medicine Residency Program Directors' Selection Working Group.

Recently he has been involved in the CFPC's  “Outcomes of Training” project as well as his continuing work on competency-based medical education, assessment, selection for training and accreditation.

Competency-Based Medical Education(CBME)

Curriculum design, competency-based assessment, fidelity of implementation and outcome measurement.

Selection

Specific focus on improving  selection for postgraduate Family Medicine training in Canada including evidence-informed best practices and how to address social accountability mandate of medical schools through admissions and selection.

Projects

Quantifying variance in patient care provided by family physicians as attributed to their residency program training.

This is the first study to measure quality of care provided by Family Physicians as a variable of their postgraduate training location and is a potential model for similar future studies. I


Validation of a Situational Judgement Test (SJT) for Family Medicine(FM) Residency Selection in Canada

Dr. Wycliffe-Jones if the Principal Investigator and Project lead on the development and implementation of a new, national  FM-specific Situational Judgement Test(SJT) for use in Family Medicine Residency selection.


Do Canadian medical graduates perceive the selection process for Family Medicine Residency training in Canada as fair?

Dr.Wycliffe-Jones is the n the Project Lead and Principal Investigator on a 5 year(2019-2023) annual survey of Canadian Medical Graduates' perceptions of fairness in FM Residency selection.


Exploring the normalization of Competency-Based Medical Education across Canada

Dr. Wycliffe-Jones is the Co-Principal Investigator on a project involving Canadian Residency Programs which involves the following objectives;1) Examine if/how core principles of CBME are routinely embedded into practice 2)Examine the depth of implementation and integration of CBME principles and 3) Identify critical practices or activities that support, drive, or challenge implementation of CBME principles across contexts
