Biography

Dr. Ron Spice graduated from the University of Alberta in 1985 and went on to do a residency in Family Medicine in Edmonton. Dr. Spice practiced full scope rural medicine in High Level, AB and Claresholm, AB from 1987 to 2001. In 2001, he did extra training in Palliative Medicine and has practiced as a Family Physician Palliative Consultant ever since. He currently works clinically with the Calgary Zone Rural Palliative Consultation Service, and is the Zone Clinical Department Head for the Alberta Health Services Calgary Zone Department of Rural Medicine. Dr. Spice is also the Academic Rural Director for the Department of Family Medicine at the Cumming School of Medicine of the University of Calgary.

  • Palliative care
Summary of Research

Dr. Spice is primarily involved in research in palliative care and palliative/hospice care service delivery. He is a co-investigator on a project investigating the use of Web-based Videoconferencing to support Palliative patients in their homes. Dr. Spice is the co-investigator on a project investigating opportunities for experiences in nature by palliative patients. He is also co-investigator on a project to look at the experiences of family physicians in Calgary in caring for palliative patients.
