Dr. Werthner’s term as interim provost and vice-president (academic) extended for one year

Message to the campus community from President Ed McCauley
Penny Werthner
Penny Werthner

I’m writing today to let you know that Dr. Penny Werthner, PhD, has agreed to stay on as interim provost and vice-president (academic) for another year (until June 30, 2024).

Penny’s leadership during these last five months has been significant. She has played an instrumental role in launching the strategic planning initiative, transforming our budget model and budget process, and advancing our foundational strategies (EDIA, Indigenous, Mental Health, Global Engagement, Sustainability). Penny provides us continuity and strong leadership at a time of change and I’m grateful she has consented to extending her interim appointment. The search for a new provost and vice-president (academic) will begin in fall 2023.

Dr. Werthner became the interim provost and vice-president (academic) in August 2022. Prior to that she served as dean of the Faculty of Kinesiology from 2012-2022 and, under her leadership, the faculty has been named #1 for schools of sport science in North America for the last four years, and #11 globally. Her research is in the area of life-long and social learning, women and sport, and biofeedback for optimal performance. She is one of the founding members of the organization, Canadian Women and Sport, and has been named one of the Top 20 Most Influential Women in Sport and Physical Activity. She is also one of Canada’s most distinguished practitioners in the field of sport psychology, working with many of Canada’s Olympic teams.

I hope you’ll join me in thanking Penny for agreeing to continuing to serve in this critical leadership role.

Regards,

Dr. Ed McCauley
