Lisa Stowe appointed director of experiential education at Taylor Institute

I am pleased to announce that Dr. Lisa Stowe, PhD, has been appointed director of experiential education at the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning effective July 1, 2019.

Dr. Stowe is a senior instructor in the Department of Communication, Media and Film in the Faculty of Arts at the University of Calgary and has more than 13 years of experience working and collaborating with students, faculty and staff across campus.

She was a key contributor to the University of Calgary’s Experiential Learning Working Group, which drafted the definition for experiential learning on campus, and served as a member and Director for the Peer Mentoring Network.

Dr. Stowe is a leading scholar in experiential learning. Her doctoral research focused on the role of experiential learning in group study programs and she has presented her research at a variety of national and international conferences including the Canadian Association for the Study of Adult Education, the National Society of Experiential Education, and at the Lilly Conference on Teaching and Learning.

She is also a recipient of a University of Calgary Teaching Award for Experiential Learning Initiatives.

Dr. Stowe is a UCalgary alumna with a PhD from the Werklund School of Education. She also has a Bachelor of Arts, a Bachelor of Education and a Master of Arts from Memorial University of Newfoundland.

As director of experiential education, Dr. Stowe will be responsible for promoting and advancing experiential education at the University of Calgary through initiatives led out of the Taylor Institute, realizing its teaching, learning and research vision. She will also lead the development of experiential education programs and initiatives and actively engage in scholarship related to experiential education in a post-secondary context. In this role she will also oversee the work of the College of Discovery, Creativity and Innovation and will collaborate with units across campus to strengthen experiential education.
