New initiative seeks teaching and learning experts across campus
Riley Brandt, University of Calgary
A new program in teaching and learning is being launched across campus this fall to create leadership opportunities for faculty members and to advance our commitment to the priorities outlined in the Academic and Research Plans. The University of Calgary’s Educational Leaders in Residence program will be recruiting faculty members to spark change in teaching and learning, through partnerships with the vice-provosts and the Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning (TI).
Over the next two years, the vice-provost (teaching and learning) will be seeking Educational Leaders in Residence to lead in priority areas such as online and blended learning, and academic integrity.
“We have stellar faculty here on campus with expertise in teaching and learning, who are doing great work that would benefit our entire campus community. We want to create opportunities for them to leverage their expertise and help enhance our learning culture,” says Dr. Leslie Reid, vice-provost (teaching and learning).
Supporting graduate students through mentorship
The first Education Leaders in Residence role will be in the area of Graduate Supervision and Mentorship beginning September 2019. This leader in residence will build on existing initiatives to develop, lead, and evaluate strategies that enhance graduate supervision and mentoring across campus.
“This program is an exciting collaboration that will allow the Faculty of Graduate Studies to develop the next phase of its supervisory development strategy,” says Dr Robin Yates, interim vice-provost and dean, Graduate Studies. “Partnering with the Taylor Institute will not only allow for the development of programs that will expose supervisors to cutting-edge approaches to mentorship and graduate education, but also facilitate new research into pedagogical practice for thesis-based programs.”
Leveraging a hub for teaching and learning
The Educational Leaders in Residence program helps expand upon the TI’s vision to better understand and improve student learning and the lived experiences of faculty in teaching and mentorship.
“We are committed to partnering with faculty to strengthen teaching and learning communities, practices and cultures across the academic community,” says Dr. Natasha Kenny, PhD, senior director, Taylor Institute for Teaching and Learning. “The Educational Leaders in Residence program will help us connect with faculty across the university, to learn from their experiences, and amplify their leadership and expertise in teaching.”
