November is Crohn’s and Colitis month, and we are pleased to congratulate Dr. Derek McKay, PhD, recipient of the 2021 Crohn’s and Colitis Canada Finkelstein Award.

The Finkelstein Award recognizes an individual whose contributions reflect excellence, either through a particular accomplishment or through continuous efforts over time. The Finkelstein family, co-founders of Crohn’s and Colitis Canada (CCC), intended this award as a “hug” for a deserving individual who may or may not have been publicly recognized for achievement in the field of Crohn’s and colitis.

“Dr. McKay has made outstanding and important contributions to the Inflammatory Bowel Disease community for over 20 years,” said Marilyn Finkelstein as she presented the award at the recent CCC National Volunteer Awards ceremony. “His drive, dedication, deep passion and commitment towards research, education, fundraising and finding a cure are remarkable. Congratulations Derek!”

This award began in 1990, and Snyder Institute members, Dr. Keith Sharkey, PhD (2016), Dr. Remo Panaccione, MD (2012) and Dr. Lloyd Sutherland, MD (2003) are past recipients. No other institution in Canada has received more than a single award, highlighting the ongoing commitment of the Gastrointestinal Research Group and the Snyder Institute in the fight against IBD via cutting-edge research, and patient and community education and engagement.
