Construction Project Notices

Oct. 30, 2018

Original 2019 opening date now in effect

We were hoping the new Foothills Medical Centre (FMC) Central Parkade would be completed ahead of schedule but because of construction challenges it is likely that the project will not be completed until 2019, as originally planned.

While most of the parkade structure is complete, there are some issues with the initial asphalt application. We are working with the contractors on possible solutions but at this time it seems unlikely we can avoid postponing the weather dependent asphalt work until spring 2019.

While we recognize the temporary inconvenience this change in schedule could create, we cannot sacrifice the quality of the work on this project.  The long-term safety of our patients and staff is our highest priority. We also want to ensure that in the long run, these improvements will greatly benefit patient, staff and physician experience at the Foothills Medical Centre.

As much of the operational work required to open the parkade that can be done is being done. This includes the assignment and confirmation of staff and physicians to their parking spots, which means once the parkade construction is complete the site will be in a position to open quickly.

We will provide further updates on progress as soon as we are able to, including a final decision on whether opening earlier than 2019 is possible.

Patients and the public will be asked to continue parking on site at one of four main alternate locations.
• North Parking/Lot 6 Parkade
• West Parking/Lot 10 Underground Parkade
• South Parking/Lot 3 Underground Parkade
• East Parking/Lot 8A surface parking

We are also exploring options that would increase patient and visitor parking on site over the winter months should we not be able to open Central Parking before this time.

Many staff and physicians will continue to park at the two temporary off-site parking locations just south of the Alberta Children's Hospital (1200 stalls), and at the Main Campus of the University of Calgary (600 stalls) with no changes to the existing shuttle bus service.

The new 2,000 stall FMC Central parkade will accommodate the original 1,200 stalls plus another 800 stalls which were previously on Lot 7 – where the new Calgary Cancer Centre is being built.

We appreciate your cooperation and patience as we work to find a solution and complete this important project.
