Congratulations to the Snyder Institute members who were successful with their CIHR 2022 Spring Project competition submissions:

  • Johnathan Canton
  • Jennifer Corcoran
  • Joe Harrison
  • Derek McKay
  • Mike Parkins
  • Pere Santamaria (2 grants)
  • Alexei Savchenko
  • Jane Shearer

Awardee Johnathan Canton shared some thoughts on how this grant will impact his research:

“We study how a group of cells called dendritic cells contribute to anti-cancer immunity. This CIHR grant will allow us to leverage state of the art technology, such as single-cell RNAseq and super-resolution microscopy, to uncover the ways in which dendritic cells fight cancer.”

The total awarded to Snyder members is $6,905,228 over five years. Out of 23 submissions, 9 were successful, giving our Institute a 39% success rate.

“Being a Snyder member has helped with my success in this, and other, grant applications. The Snyder Institute provides a wealth of resources including access to successful grant applications and a team of mentors who have helped in developing my grantsmanship,” says Canton.

“The Institute has provided critical support to me in these early days as an independent researcher,” he adds. “Through the Snyder’s research groups, such as the Immunology Research Group, and associated events, I have found a “home base” where friendly and supportive colleagues are always willing to provide advice and to support the development of my research program.”

Some of the submissions that were not successful were highly rated and ranked near the boundary of the funding cut off. This should bode well for re-submission, and we wish each of you that little bit of extra luck for the Fall competition.
