The faculty provides a number of different funding opportunities for those with primary membership in Cumming School of Medicine.  Some opportunities are listed below but you are encouraged to also speak with your research institutes for more opportunities. 

Internal Funding Opportunities

The OADR will provide up to $5,000 / year for Principal Investigators (PI) or lab members to obtain training in new techniques and methodologies that will enhance their research endeavors. The aim is to keep our range of technical expertise at a world class level to increase the impact of published work and future grant applications. Proposals will be considered to support acquisition of technical or methodological advances to improve an identified future grant application or to rapidly respond to acquiring research data requested by reviewers of manuscripts currently under review for potential publication in a high impact journal (Impact Factor ≥ 8 or specific research field leading journal).

This opportunity will support the Eyes High strategic vision of leadership in high impact clinical research at UC and promote the objectives of AHS strategy for research innovation and analytics.

Key goals for this fund:

  • To increase the number of high impact, UC-led clinical research studies
  • To increase UC success in attracting Tri-Council funding for clinical studies
  • To improve the Alberta health system and the health of Albertans

Faculty Seed Grants (Health, Natural Sciences or Engineering): Open to applicants whose research falls within the domains of CIHR/NSERC. 

Faculty Seed Grants (Social Sciences and Humanities): Open to applicants whose research falls within the domains of SSHRC. 

Partnership Seed Grants (SSHRC Partnership Development stream): Provides support for the development of partnership arrangements and research activities that will be suitable for future SSHRC Partnership Grant or Partnership Development Grant opportunities. 

Partnership Seed Grants (SSHRC Partnership Engage stream): Provides support for the development of partnership arrangements and research activities that will be suitable for future SSHRC Partnership Engage Grant funding opportunity.

The Office of the Vice-President (Research) is pleased to announce a new internal stimulus grant program – VPR Catalyst Grants – which asks researchers to think boldly and strategically to maximize the impact of downstream funding.

VPR Catalyst Grants will prioritize those who present a winning research context, including aspects such as mentorship, strong collaborators, and knowledge engagement partnerships.

  • Designed to catalyze research initiatives that will lead to substantial external funding
  • Intended to support early-stage research activities
  • Value: $1,000 - $15,000
  • Duration: Catalyst funds should be used within 6 months
  • Deadlines: 4 intake dates per year

The new Transdisciplinary Scholarship Connector Grants program is designed to promote initiatives that enable UCalgary teams to explore questions, challenges and opportunities that demand a transdisciplinary approach.

The proposed activities need to clearly show how they will result in lasting new connections as well as how they will benefit the area of scholarship being addressed.

  • Designed to foster new connections among scholars, trainees, and external partners
  • Intended to support activities that help build new transdisciplinary connections.
  • Value: up to $20,000
  • Duration: 6-12 months
  • Deadlines: 4 intake dates per year
