Welcome from a Poodle (1988)!
My best advice is “enjoy the ride”.
Medicine is a calling ; so never lose your humanity or sense of purpose.

Greetings to the Tanunkis from a proud Poodle!  I remember the anxiety I felt, being admitted off the wait list without a science background....I was sure it was a mistake!  Don't listen to those voices in your head.  We chose you for a reason.  You belong here, and every person in this faculty wants you to succeed.  Work hard, but don't forget to sleep, eat, exercise, and have fun.  Don't give up the things that fuel you and make you happy because you think you don't have time.  You've got this!

Congratulations on getting into Calgary medical school. This will be one of the best experiences of your lifetimes. Enjoy it all, the great people, the city, outdoors  and the process of becoming great physicians. Get involved in everything especially if it is unfamiliar. Great things happen when you least expect it. Time passes so quickly. It feels like it was just yesterday for me. I hope to meet some of you in the near future and wish you all the very best on this great adventure.

Welcome, Tanukis!  My years in the MD program were some of the best of my life.  It's always exciting to move to the next stage, but take the time to enjoy the process, as it goes fast.  You'll meet some amazing people and have some incredible experiences in the next few years.  When it gets challenging (and it will!), remember: you're here for a reason, and don't be afraid to look to each other and to the fantastic UME staff for support.  I wish you all success in the years ahead!

There are many things you will learn over the next month, three years, career.  You will be challenged, exhilarated, frustrated, and feted. Do not be confused or misled by the hype - this is not about you.  Yes, it will involve you, so very seriously and completely. But ultimately it is about your patients. Indeed, the next three years have been given to you by your community, to allow you to learn and initiate your own enduring understanding of this principle.
To do this you must take care of yourself.  You cannot be a resource to your patients or your community if your health, your heart, or your soul are somewhere else.  Proper care of yourself  is required for proper care of your patients. And in the end, it is all about your patients.
-Russ P 1975

The beginning of medical school for many of you will be one of the most exciting times of your life. Congratulations on getting to this point in your career. I can only assure you that it only gets better as your training and career advances. So enjoy the new knowledge gained and life-long friends that you will make as you begin this journey at the University of Calgary.

- Todd A 1985

Congratulations on starting medical school!
There will be much to learn in the years ahead, and lots of time spent honing the skills necessary to become the kind of doctor to whom you would refer your own relatives.
While focusing on the "main dish" of medical knowledge and skill, consider also nurturing a "side dish" that can serve as way to satisfy your curiosity and your drive to make an impact. Whether that side dish is research, advocacy, education, policy, or something else, it will likely make you a better clinician and the variety will bolster your ability to thrive professionally and personally in the decades ahead. Good luck!!

Yōkoso!
Welcome to the CSM family, and to our long-serving, honourable profession.  The excitement of the school, your classmates, your education and ultimately, the community you will serve awaits you.  Remember the uniqueness that you bring and share that with everyone along your journey.  We all enrich each other....that's what I tell my patients.  Along the way, a lot of alumni and other mentors are there to be resources and guides.  We are a family.
Best wishes.  Gokigenyō!

Welcome and Congratulations!!
It's such an accomplishment to be where you are and you should be proud. Look out for each other over the coming years, and throughout your careers. You'll need compassionate and supportive colleagues for the rest of your education and throughout your journey in medicine. They will understand you in a way it will sometimes be difficult for other loved ones to grasp. Sometimes it's difficult to be friends with med students/residents/physicians -- we collectively can be ... difficult. But if we have each other, loneliness will never count among our troubles.
Good luck and have a blast!

Welcome to you all,
I don't normally relay greetings of this sort, but feel that this one must have been pre-ordained.  This Spring my wife and I joined friends from Calgary and Australia (all physicians in the autumn of our careers) on a trip in Japan.  I usually do a little research on the natural history of the countries we visit and learned for the first time of the racoon dog.  Part of our trip involved 8 days of hiking through forested areas but I am sad to say we did not encounter any live specimens.  I can report that they were a popular lawn ornament however!  All in all you could have done worse.
