CSM Strategic Planning

Developing a living strategy

Defining our future together

The Cumming School of Medicine (CSM) is embarking on a new era, including an update to the strategy guiding our work for the next several years. And we believe a strong strategy grows out of diverse perspectives.

Senior leadership and a faculty Working Group have engaged the facilitation team at J5 Design to help us reach out to stakeholders like you over the next few months and gather input into our future direction. This includes broad public engagement with the CSM community with several opportunities to participate throughout the process.

Advisory Groups

In addition to bringing together a Working Group of CSM community members to work directly with J5, several advisory groups have been created to consider important questions about the future. Here are the advisory group names and examples of the questions they are working on:

  • What needs to change at CSM to foster authentic inclusion and sense of belonging for Black Faculty?
  • What are the top priorities for Black Faculty at CSM and in community practice?
  • If CSM were successful in advancing the interests of Black Faculty, what would success look like in 5 years?  What would success look like in 10 years?
  • How can we engage clinical faculty?
  • How do we help solve education and access issues in rural Alberta?
  • How do you promote a healthy learning and working environment?
  • What are the needs now and in the future for data storage and management?
  • How do we support data management for both basic science and clinical faculty?
  • Governance of data (access, sharing)
  • How do we foster ongoing principles of EDIA in CSM?
  • Where are the gaps in EDIA in CSM?
  • How do you promote a healthy learning and working environment?
  • How can we encourage cross pollination of learners?
  • How do we synergize with Veterinary Medicine and share positions?
  • How do you promote a healthy learning and working environment?
  • How can we support the growth of an independent Indigenous office?
  • How do we continue to foster Indigenous ways of knowing and being in CSM?
  • How do you promote a healthy learning and working environment?
  • Do you support the “cross-pollination” of the student body?
  • How do you promote a healthy learning and working environment?
  • How would you like to be engaged in the school?
  • Is EDIA reflected in your work area?
  • How do you promote a healthy learning and working environment?
  • No specific questions posed in advance
  • What are the pre-requisites for CSM to be truly outstanding in 10 to 20 years?
  • Are there priorities in other institutes besides HBI and Snyder that should be highlighted?
  • How do we promote precision health initiatives in all research institutes and departments?

Background and resources

The CSM’s new strategic plan process evolves from previous faculty strategic plans and the vision of creating the future of health. This process aligns with the University of Calgary’s planning processes. The new strategic plan will be a living strategy that molds and evolves through time, influenced by the CSM’s focus on precision medicine and precision public health.
