New Department Head, Pathology & Laboratory Medicine

Alberta Health Services, Calgary Zone, and the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine are pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Christopher Naugler, MD, FRCPC, as the new Head of the Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine. This appointment was effective as of October 1, 2016.

Currently, Dr. Naugler is an Associate Professor, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine and Family Medicine, University of Calgary. He was also the Zone Clinical Section Chief of General Pathology, and then the Section Head of Pathology Informatics, with Calgary Lab Services.

Dr. Naugler’s research includes work on laboratory test appropriateness, clinical epidemiology and pathology informatics. He runs a unique program which uses secondary laboratory test data to address questions in clinical epidemiology and the optimal use of laboratory tests.  He completed his graduate studies at Queen’s University, followed by specialty training in general pathology at Dalhousie University. Since then, he has held many different positions with both the University of Calgary and Calgary Lab Services.

Dr. Naugler works extensively with The Canadian Association of Pathologists, Choosing Wisely Canada, the Alberta Medical Association, and the Alberta College of Physicians and Surgeons. He was the winner of the 2014 GREAT Supervisor Award, awarded by the University of Calgary’s Faculty of Graduate Studies, and the winner of the 2013 Watanabe Distinguished Achievement Award for Overall Excellence, awarded by the University of Calgary’s Cumming School of Medicine.
