ePortfolio
The University of Calgary has decided to utilize the Royal College ePortfolio as the electronic assessment platform for our CBD residents for the next several years.
According to the Royal College, “ePortfolio will:
- Allow for the electronic capture of observations;
- Contain up-to-date Royal College educational standards and program learning plans;
- Enable Competence Committee to assess learners’ progress;
- Facilitate learner and observer interaction;
- Produce analytics and reports for monitoring and benchmarking (future release); and
- Archive a physician’s learning data in a single secure location” 1.
Once programs launch in CBD they will be required to use ePortfolio for their CBD residents. In order to prepare programs for this launch, the Royal College is aiming to make several EPAs available within ePortfolio in the year before the intended launch so that programs can pilot their EPAs within their setting(s) and have faculty and residents become familiar with using ePortfolio as a tool for observation based assessment.
Within ePortfolio initiating an observation is not necessarily the sole responsibility of the resident but rather, program administrators, teaching supervisors and other assigned observers are able to initiate observations on behalf of the resident. Observation requests initiated by the program administrator are valid for 1 year whereas those initiated by residents and observers are only valid for 7 days 2.
Resources
We encourage program directors and administrators to familiarize themselves with the following resources on ePortfolio and to share them with residents and faculty.
1. Royal College ePortfolio Webinar -
2. ePortfolio Training Modules (Select the module specific to your role(s)). Please note that these training modules are embedded within e-portfolio and access will be provided when your program begins trailing EPAs on eportfolio -
