Learner Resources
We help learners and program directors navigate the challenges of postgraduate medical learning by offering resources, consultation, policy support, and more. We support all residents to develop learning skills, help learners encountering academic difficulty, and support program directors leading their learners through individualized learning plans.
Value Statement:
Our approach to learners with academic difficulty at the University of Calgary Cumming School of Medicine Postgraduate Medical Education Office is grounded in integrity, caring respect, and growth orientation. We strive to engage learners with honesty and authenticity, to uphold dignity and fairness in all interactions, and to cultivate a realistic optimism that supports both wellness and professional development. We also support residency programs by providing guidance and resources to faculty and program directors, fostering a culture that enables both learners and programs to thrive.
Three Core Values:
1. Integrity – approaching remediation with authenticity, honesty, and courage.
2. Caring Respect – fostering dignity, fairness, compassion and grace in supporting learners.
3. Growth Orientation – promoting realistic optimism, wellness, and the pursuit of professional development, health, and wellness.
Mission statement:
Our mission is to grow the understanding and implementation of learning supports in postgraduate medical education by cultivating professional development for faculty teachers and program directors, promoting respectful and supportive approaches for learners, and advancing a culture of caring integrity and realistic optimism. Through local and national collaboration, we seek to reduce stigma, share best practices, and build sustainable systems that foster growth, wellness, and lifelong learning. We are committed to promoting systemic change in postgraduate medical education by dismantling the culture of perfectionism and replacing it with growth-oriented, humane practices that recognize failure as an essential and valued part of learning.
Vision Statement:
Our vision is to transform postgraduate medical education into a culture that values authenticity, respect, and realistic optimism. We envision learning environments where learners, faculty, and program directors are supported through professional development, where national collaboration fosters research-driven, meaningful innovation, and where failure is embraced as a valued part of growth. Through this cultural change, we aspire to build humane, supportive systems that promote wellness, dignity, and lifelong learning for all involved in medical education.
