Dr. Sonia Butalia

Dr. Sonia Butalia is an Associate Professor in the Departments of Medicine and Community Health Sciences at the University of Calgary. Dr. Butalia is actively involved in clinical medicine, research, and teaching. She was awarded prestigious fellowship awards from the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) and Alberta Innovates-Health Solutions (AI-HS) during her training. She now holds the National Diabetes Canada New Investigator Award.

Her research interests are in innovative tools and strategies to improve diabetes and other cardiovascular risk factors in the community. Her program of work importantly engages and is informed by people with diabetes (i.e. patients), physicians, care providers and decision makers.

Finally, she is a co-author of several national clinical practice guidelines for Diabetes Canada (formerly the Canadian Diabetes Association) and Hypertension Canada. Follow her on Twitter @Sonia_ButaliaMD.

 

Dr. Lois Donovan

I am a clinical researcher with a focus on diabetes in pregnancy and thyroid function and thyroid disease in pregnancy. The type of research that I conduct ranges from epidemiologic research to multicenter randomized controlled trials. My research focuses on ways of improving pregnancy outcomes in women that have type 1 and type 2 diabetes and their children. My research also focuses on determining the best diagnostic and treatment thresholds for gestational diabetes and thyroid function during pregnancy to ensure evidenced based thresholds are used so that maternal and child health is optimized.

Dr. Doreen Rabi

Dr. Rabi is situated at the Cumming School of Medicine and her research program is focused on the cardiovascular complications of diabetes. She has CIHR funding to investigate novel approaches to engaging patients in the self-management of chronic diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Dr. Rabi has provided supervision to many graduate students and provides course teaching in Systematic Reviews and Meta-analyses within the department of Community Health Sciences.

Dr. Rabi is a nationally recognized for her contributions to clinical practice guidelines in hypertension and diabetes. Dr. Rabi is the Chair of the Hypertension Canada (formerly Canadian Hypertension Education Program) Guidelines Committee and she is a member of the executive committee for the 2018 Canadian Diabetes Association Clinical Practice Guidelines.

Dr. Ron Sigal

Dr. Ron Sigal is Professor of Medicine, Kinesiology, Cardiac Sciences and Community Health Sciences at the Cumming School of Medicine and is active in clinical medicine, teaching and research.

He has held a Health Senior Scholar award from Alberta Innovates-Health Solutions, and previously an OHRI Research Chair and a Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) New Investigator Award. Dr. Sigal’s research focuses on physical activity interventions in people with or at risk of diabetes, and prevention of cardiovascular and renal complications in people who have diabetes.
