Subspecialty Fellowship Training Programs
The Severe Asthma Fellowship is a one year training program, and has a defined curriculum designed to cover all aspects of advanced training in the assessment and management of patients with severe asthma as well as other inflammatory airways diseases. Candidates must be completing or have completed a Canadian Respirology fellowship program and be eligible to work in Canada.
The severe asthma fellowship has a focus on excellence in clinical care, with 60% of the time devoted to clinical training, although this may be adjusted to meet the goals of the trainee. The clinical component will include ambulatory clinics in severe asthma, chronic cough, COPD and dysfunctional breathlessness. The trainee will participate in general respiratory rounds, radiology rounds and weekly asthma and airways diseases case conference discussions. Clinical training will also include time spent learning the methodologies of pulmonary function testing as it pertains to severe airways disease. There will be an emphasis on techniques around sputum induction and processing as well as interpretation of sputum cell count results (a test offered as part of the research program), and methacholine challenge testing. The remaining time will be dedicated to a planned research project and experience in clinical trials research.
The Fellowship is funded with a base commitment of $15000 from the University of Calgary GSK Chair in Inflammatory Lung Disease and successful applicants are encouraged to apply for external funding from sources such as inter alia, CLA, CRRN, CSACI and CAAIF. The remainder of the renumeration required for all University of Calgary PGME fellowship programs ($68000) is made through opportunity for locum weeks/weekends for the Division of Respiratory Medicine in Calgary.

We offer a one year interventional pulmonary medicine fellowship in Calgary.
The fellowship offers advanced clinical training in diagnostic and therapeutic bronchoscopy, as well as in the management of pleural disease and thoracic complications of malignancy.

The University of Calgary and FMC Sleep Centre offer a 1-3 year fellowship in Sleep Medicine, comprising one foundational year followed by up to two additional clinical or academic years. The primary objective is to provide comprehensive training that will facilitate an academic career in Sleep Medicine.
The foundational year of the fellowship provides advanced clinical training in Sleep Medicine and scholarly activities (i.e., research, quality improvement, medical education) to meet the requirements of the Area of Focused Competency (AFC) in Sleep Disorder Medicine diploma offered by the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada (RCPSC). Details about the AFC in Sleep Disorder Medicine are available here.
Fellows may undertake an additional year of clinical training in the management of respiratory failure due to neuromuscular diseases. Trainees who wish to pursue additional focused training in research, education or QI can continue for up to two more years through an Academic Sleep Medicine Fellowship; this Fellowship is unique in Canada and prepares trainees for an academic career in Sleep Medicine.
Funding for the foundational year will come predominantly from participation in clinical activities in the fellow’s core specialty. For non-respirology trainees, we will facilitate discussions with the relevant clinical departments to find opportunities for clinical work. The University of Calgary requires advanced clinical fellows have a minimum funding equivalent to a first-year resident salary. Funding for subsequent years of research training will be guaranteed for fellows accepted into this stream.
