What is HHT?

Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT), also known as Osler-Weber-Rendu Syndrome, is a genetic disorder that results in malformed blood vessels throughout the body. The abnormal blood vessels can be small (telangiectasias) or large (arterio-venous malformations) and can occur in any part of the body. Most patients experience frequent nosebleeds from telangiectasias in the nasal passages. When the abnormal blood vessels occur in major organs such as the brain, lung, liver, stomach or bowel, people with HHT can have serious complications. There are treatments available to manage HHT and to manage iron deficiency or anemia that can develop from frequent nosebleeds or bleeding from the stomach or bowel. Everyone with HHT should be screened to determine if HHT is affecting their major organs.

HHT is a hereditary disorder, meaning it can be passed down through generations in a family. All first-degree relatives of an individual with HHT should be screened to determine if they also have HHT. HHT occurs in about 1 in every 5000 Canadians.

There is excellent detailed information about HHT on the Cure HHT website: www.curehht.org
