Terms of Reference
- The CCSC Graduate Student Scholarship program supports academically superior graduate students who are receiving training and conducting research in an area related to the prevention and/or early detection of colorectal cancer.
- Graduate students (masters or doctoral level) undertaking full-time courses/research at the University of Calgary are eligible.
- The program helps to develop both new knowledge and the next generation workforce to support research into the prevention and early detection of colorectal cancer.
- The scholarship is intended to support the recipient in concentrating his/her full-time attention to the proposed research. In addition to living expenses, tuition, etc., recipients are encouraged to use a portion of the scholarship to enhance their training experience, such as attending scientific meetings and the purchase of software and books.
- The competition is administered and adjudicated by the CCSC Research Unit.
Scholarship Details
- This funding is open to Canadian, permanent resident and international students pursuing graduate studies at the University of Calgary.
- The term of the scholarship is two - three years, but multi-year scholarships are renewed annually and are contingent upon satisfactory reporting by the student.
- Students who have been awarded a CCSC Graduate Student Scholarship must complete annual and final reports through the term of their award and post-award reports after the end of the award.
- Scholarship requirements and conditions at the start date of the award continue through the term of the scholarship.
- Each candidate must be sponsored by a faculty supervisor, possessing both a record of productive research and sufficient resources to ensure the satisfactory conduct of the research.
- Master’s students awarded a scholarship, when not holding a major award, will receive a stipend of $26,000 per year. Master’s students are eligible for a maximum of two years of funding.
- Doctoral students awarded a scholarship, when not holding a major award, will receive a stipend of $31,000 per year. Doctoral students are eligible for a maximum of three years of funding.
- Students who receive another major award are eligible for a $10,000 top up for the duration of the major award.
- For degrees already in progress, the term of the scholarship will be reduced by one year for each academic year or portion of an academic year spent participating in the graduate program, prior to commencing the scholarship, as determined by the registration date on their transcripts.
- Students must seek and receive approval in writing prior to any significant changes to the research as outlined in the approved application. This includes, but is not limited to, changes in supervisor, project, department and program of study.
- Scholarship recipients are expected to devote their time to the completion of their degree program. No more than 450 hours per year of research activities for supplemental income is allowed. Scholarship recipients may not hold full-time employment during any period of the scholarship support.
- All scholarships are subject to the availability of funds.
- Recipients may choose to commence the Graduate Student Scholarship on January 1 or September 1. Applications are due six months before the proposed commencement date.
