Sarcoidosis can affect adults of any age or gender and present at any phase in life. Patients with lung involvement often experience cough and shortness of breath. Many patients with pulmonary sarcoidosis are well-suited to follow up in a general respirology clinic. The Sarcoidosis Clinic focuses on providing care for patients with sarcoidosis who have any of the following:
- Advanced disease requiring therapies beyond prednisone or methotrexate. Specifically, patients that may need azathioprine, mycophenolate, or biologic therapy (infliximab, adalimumab)
- Require diagnostic clarification that may include advanced bronchoscopic biopsy techniques such as endobronchial ultrasound
- Multisystem involvement (e.g. heart and lung)
The Pulmonary Sarcoidosis clinic aims to provide expert clinical care for patients who have sarcoidosis with lung involvement. The clinic facilitates research to improve outcomes for sarcoidosis patients and collaborates with specialists throughout the province. The clinic opened in early 2020, as it had become clear that the complex care of patients with sarcoidosis required a dedicated specialty clinic.
The clinic works closely with specialists from cardiology, neurology, and rheumatology, as well as physicians from all over Alberta including Medicine Hat, Red Deer, Lethbridge, and Edmonton.
